What are we reading? Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.

- by Carol Dweck

Research over recent decades has focused on the concept of mindset, particularly the distinction between fixed and growth mindsets. Professor Carol Dweck explores numerous examples of both in her book "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success." Early in the book, she highlights a crucial leadership principle—our ability to choose our own mindset.

To understand the power of mindset, consider this simple example: Watch five-year-old children at a park, school, or community event. Every action they take is a new adventure filled with learning. Now compare them to the adults you encounter daily. Do these adults show the same energy and passion? Rarely. As a leader, what steps can you take today to foster curiosity and promote a growth mindset?

Two Tips

“One can choose to go back toward safety or forward toward growth. Growth must be chosen again and again; fear must be overcome again and again.”

- Abraham Maslow

“It’s not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest.”

- Carol S. Dweck
