What are we reading? Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don't.

- by Jim Collins

Not a new leadership book and likely a book many of you have read, but many great lessons worth repeating!

As the title implies, moving from good to great is a challenge faced by organizations, teams, companies, and individuals. In the first couple of chapters, author Jim Collins provides many examples of successful and unsuccessful leadership. Based on the research conducted by Collins and his team, we gain a better understanding of why some leaders continue to grow and improve while others don't.

As you read this book, consider this: Have you ever been a member of a great team that eventually failed due to an unwillingness to change? What about professional sports teams? Why is it so rare to see professional sports teams win multiple championships year after year? Regardless of the sport, repeating as the champion is a difficult task. A championship team is celebrated and honored by their fans and community, often referred to as a great team. And, for that moment, "great" may be the correct term. But how is the team viewed as soon as there is a new champion?

Two Tips

“We found that for leaders to make something great, their ambition has to be for the greatness of the work and the company, rather than for themselves.”

- Jim Collins

“Expending energy trying to motivate people is largely a waste of time… if you have the right people on the bus, they will be self-motivated.”

- Jim Collins
