What are we reading? Never Not Working: Why the Always On Culture Is Bad for Business and How to Fix It.
- by Melissa Clark
When Hard Work Becomes Too Much Work
Half of all U.S. workers consider themselves workaholics. While this statistic certainly catches our attention, the more critical leadership takeaway is understanding what being a workaholic really means—and what it doesn’t.
Being a workaholic isn’t defined by long hours alone. Many effective leaders put in extra time when needed, yet still maintain healthy boundaries. The real marker of workaholism is the inability to “turn it off.” It’s the guilt or anxiety that creeps in when you’re not working, even when you’ve earned a moment of rest.
True leadership requires energy, clarity, and perspective—qualities that can’t thrive without balance. Workaholism is less about time and more about mindset: the psychological and emotional attachment we form to our work.
Ask yourself:
Can you take a few minutes each day to clear your mind without feeling tied to your job?
Can you enjoy family, friends, or hobbies without that persistent thought—I should be working right now?
Leadership isn’t about how many hours you give—it’s about how present, purposeful, and balanced you are when you lead.
👉 Quick Action Step:
Take 15 minutes today to unplug—step away from your phone and work tasks. Notice how it feels to pause without guilt. Awareness is the first step to breaking the “can’t turn it off” habit.
