 Richard Carlson

Being happy is good! This seems like a simple principle, yet it isn't the case in most organizations. For decades, there's been an unwritten badge of honor suggesting that the hardest workers must appear unhappy, frustrated, and tired. Think about your organization—do you know someone who shows up and remains genuinely happy regardless of what's happening around them? Somehow, the perception forms that this person can't be a "hard worker," as if it's impossible to be both happy and hardworking.

The reality is quite the opposite. The person who comes to work each day living a well-balanced, connected, and fulfilled life is often the most productive and truly enjoys their daily work. Remember this wisdom from the famous song "Don't Worry, Be Happy": "In every life we have some trouble—but when you worry you make it double."

Action Step

Prioritize recognizing and celebrating those who bring passion to their work in your organization. We too often focus on the negatives.

Two Tips

“There is little success where there is little laughter.”

– Andrew Carnegie

““Everyone talks about building a relationship with your customer. I think you build one with your employees first.”

– Angela Ahrendts
