What effective leaders know about failure.

Welcome to Light on Leadership! In under two minutes, our newsletter delivers one book recommendation, one leadership action step, and two leadership tips. We know you're busy, so we've designed this content to be both useful and shareable. Enjoy!

In Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, author Carol Dweck offers powerful examples of how mindset shapes not only our individual success, but also the quality of our relationships. Have you ever considered how your mindset is influenced by those around you each day? Or, perhaps more importantly, how your mindset influences the people you lead and work alongside?

What type of mindset do you model each day? It is easy to start the morning with great intentions, but what happens in the hectic pace of daily leadership life when pressure rises, time is short, and things do not go as planned? In those moments, our true mindset often shows up most clearly to those watching us.

In times of perceived “failure,” how do you choose to respond? Do you treat mistakes as something to hide, or as opportunities to model that growth comes through effort, reflection, and persistence? Let others see that you are trying to improve. Admit when something did not go as planned. Share what you are learning along the way. Honesty and vulnerability do not weaken leadership. They strengthen it, and they not only help you improve, but also help those you lead.

👉 Quick Action Step:

In your next team meeting, model a growth mindset by sharing a recent challenge you faced and what you learned from it, then invite your team to do the same.

Two Tips

This short video reminds us that failure does not have to be the end of the story. Instead, setbacks can become stepping stones when we choose to learn, adjust, and keep moving forward.

“When you make a mistake, you are not a failure. You are learning.”
