What are we reading? Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything.
- by BJ Fogg
Have you ever had a "big goal" to start eating "healthy" or exercise more? Here are three key thoughts about the importance of making small and consistent progress in the habit-building process.
We all know there's never enough time to accomplish everything we want each day. Start small (or "tiny," as the book's title suggests). When we focus on quick, short actions, they become achievable. Your goal might be to run a mile per day, but finding the time seems impossible. Instead, change your goal to doing five push-ups after your first cup of coffee each morning. While five push-ups aren't equivalent to running a mile, this small action will make a meaningful difference.
Go small or go home. We've all heard "go big or go home," but this advice proves ineffective—when we dream too big, we become overwhelmed and never leave "home." Instead, focus on taking one small, achievable step at a time.
Walk then run. Though this analogy is common, its lesson remains valuable. Have you ever seen a toddler run before learning to walk? Take that first small step before attempting your marathon.
Action Step
What is one new habit you would like to add to your life? Once you've answered this question, identify a single action you can accomplish in under two minutes each day. If you truly want to form a new habit, don't skip this important step.
