The Power of Synergy!
Welcome to Light on Leadership! In under two minutes, our newsletter delivers one book recommendation, one leadership action step, and two leadership tips. We know you're busy, so we've designed this content to be both useful and shareable. Enjoy!
What are we reading? Big Potential: How Transforming the Pursuit of Success Raises Our Achievement, Happiness, and Well-Being.- Shawn Achor
As the book begins, Achor evaluates the difference between individual achievements versus the skills and attributes needed for team success. He provides an interesting story regarding the 1970s classic movie Star Wars and the famous line "May the Force be with you." According to the story, this iconic line was almost not used in the movie, and instead "May the Force of Others be with you" was almost selected. There is a valuable leadership lesson to be explored as we reflect on "the force of others."
In your leadership work, you have often heard about the term synergy. As defined by Merriam-Webster, synergy is the increased effectiveness that results when two or more people or businesses work together. Is this the concept that George Lucas was thinking about when stating, "May the Force of others be with you"? What if the true focus of everyone across the globe was driven by adding value to the lives of others? While we can't control the attitudes and mindset of everyone we meet, we can approach each day with the focus of adding value and positively impacting others. A positive attitude is contagious.
Action Step
Teamwork matters. When you feel like you're "all alone" attempting to solve a challenging problem, reach out for help. Take advantage of the power of two.
Two Tips
"Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others."
-Jack Welch
