What are we reading? The 4 Disciplines of Execution: Achieving Your Wildly Important Goals.
- by McChesney, Covey & Huling
Change is complex and challenging. However, understanding the type of change you are undergoing is crucial before starting any "change journey." Particularly with behavioral change that involves a team, everyone needs to understand the "why." Attempting to force or mandate a behavioral change is bound to fail.
Reflect on a time when you successfully changed a behavior or habit. Did it occur because you saw it as necessary, or did someone else prompt the change? Most likely, you were intrinsically motivated to make the change. The same principle applies when initiating system-wide change. Unless those affected see the reason behind the change and understand its positive impact, you won't achieve full engagement in the new process.
Action Step
Not all change is created equal. When implementing behavioral change, remember that it takes time. Most importantly, trust must be established first.
