Leadership Book Recommendation: The Culture System - J.P. Nerbun
Two Questions
Does humor impact leadership?
Taking our leadership work seriously is important; however, we should never take ourselves too seriously. In times of crisis, anxiety and stress affect everyone within your team and organization. During these times, they need a leader who demonstrates confidence and a sense of calm. A great way to do this is by maintaining a sense of humor. This doesn't mean that the crisis isn't important, but adding to your group's stress level won't help solve the challenge. A 2020 Forbes.com article stated, "humor is the most natural and cost-free method of reducing stress, anxiety and tension while also improving an individual's physical and mental health as well as enhancing a positive world view." The next time you find yourself leading through a difficult situation, remember the value of a little humor!
Lead with humor, and don't underestimate the value of humility and vulnerability as a leader.
Do threats motivate my team members?
One of the most important aspects of leadership is the value of relationships. Without intentionally investing time and energy into meaningful connections throughout your team, it's impossible to lead effectively. When we attempt to lead through threats, the results are exactly opposite of what we're trying to accomplish. People motivated only by threats and punishment lose their sense of ownership and connection to the overall mission and vision. They view their work as something they must do to avoid negative consequences, rather than approaching each day with passion and innovation. While threats can motivate in the short term, organizations and teams that create a culture embracing a growth mindset are the ones that experience sustained success.
Are you the type of leader who blames others when things go wrong?
Two Thoughts
Culture over accountability.
Your culture is made up of the behaviors displayed when a leader is not watching or holding them accountable. It’s why accountability is overrated. If people only behave the right way when they are being watched and held accountable, then eventually your culture will fail you.
