What are we reading? Gentelligence: The Revolutionary Approach to Leading an Intergenerational Workforce. Authors: M. Gerhardt, J. Nachemson-Ekwall, and B. Fogel
Successful organizations and teams require diverse thoughts and ideas. This book introduces us to the idea of how we can better support our companies and teams when we understand the value of embracing the skills and experiences from multiple generations. Too often we hear the Baby Boomers (born between 1946–1964) complain about the work ethic of the Millennials (born between 1981–1996), and then the Millennials turn around and complain about the technology skills of the Baby Boomers.
The first couple of chapters provide insight, helping us understand how each generation has been shaped by the experiences of their lives and explore ways we can embrace these differences between generations. When we do this, we unlock the potential of our teams, and as a result, success and innovation follow. The authors provide a great example in the first chapter illustrating how expectations for each generation can vary. If you were to ask a 65-year-old member of your team and a 25-year-old member of your team their expectations for how long it should take for someone to respond to an important email, do you think the answers would be the same?
