What are we reading? Upstream: The Quest to Solve Problems Before They Happen.
- by Dan Heath
As a leader, it's natural to want to address problems immediately and move on to the next crisis. This approach works fine for simple issues. However, more complex problems often involve factors unknown to us.
As organizations grow and change, decision-makers may become increasingly detached from the original issues. To effectively solve complex problems, trust must be extended throughout the organization, giving others the opportunity to take ownership of the problem-solving process.
But can we truly depend on others to help solve problems?
The answer is yes. However, there's a significant difference between merely delegating responsibility and genuinely empowering others to problem-solve. Remember that having the right people on your team is important, but equally crucial is giving them the support they need to be successful!
