Is Conflict Good?
Our goal for the Light on Leadership newsletter is to provide you with two questions and two thoughts in less than two minutes. We know you are busy leaders, so we hope this content is something you can use and share with others! Enjoy.
Two Questions
Is Conflict Good?
A significant aspect of leadership is the ability to effectively manage conflict. Becoming an exceptional leader doesn't mean you won't encounter conflict, but it does necessitate the skills to lead during a crisis. A good piece of advice for all leaders to remember during conflict is, "Silence is golden." Consider the best teacher you ever had; they likely had the ability to pose challenging questions and skillfully allow everyone in the class to contribute their thoughts and opinions in a safe, open environment. This is the same skill required by leaders when dealing with conflict. A conflict won't be resolved if both sides are shouting at each other. To truly lead through difficult times, we must understand the genuine concerns of those involved and, like a great teacher, make everyone in the room feel valued. Learn to be comfortable with silence. It's difficult to become a good listener if you're always talking.
How Does Fear Impact Behavior?
Fear is a powerful motivator and is at the heart of most conflicts. Everyone, at some point, is pushed beyond their limits, often resulting in explosive behaviors. If you find yourself on the receiving end of such behavior, it's crucial for leaders to listen, provide space, and not take the outburst personally. When was the last time you felt pushed "beyond your limits"? Did you say or do something you later regretted? The same emotions that drive us to success can lead us to these regrettable moments. So, what's the leadership lesson here? Everyone is human, and effective leaders learn to support everyone on their team during both good and bad times. Remember to listen before speaking and don't let fear and uncertainty fuel extreme behaviors.
Two Thoughts
Embrace change.
Tomorrow won't be different if you don't change something today.
