Light on Leadership 2+2+2
Are difficult decisions stressing you out?
Our goal for the Light on Leadership newsletter is to provide you with two questions and two thoughts in less than two minutes. We know you are busy leaders, so we hope this content is something you can use and share with others! Enjoy.
Two Questions
Do you struggle to lead change?
"The fewer the facts, the stronger the opinion." This quote, credited to Arnold Glasow, illustrates the importance of emotion in the decision-making process. Facts rarely move people to action, but emotions absolutely do. How often do politicians get elected because of the many facts they can provide during a debate? Rarely. But the politician who can move others to action through emotion is likely to win the election. When attempting to initiate change within your organization, it is important to remember "the why". People can look up facts and data on their own – what they need to hear from the leader is the story. Why is this change important? Why will it make the situation better? How will it impact me personally?
How do you make difficult decisions?
When faced with making a difficult decision (which is what leaders do), what is the key principle or concept that drives your final decision? Does your organization have a strategic plan? Have you identified your core beliefs? Any time you make a difficult judgement call, there will be others who disagree. Think about the controversy we experienced when it came to decisions related to the pandemic. In many situations, there was not a “correct” answer, but someone had to be the final voice. Let your integrity and character guide you through this process.
Every successful leader makes it a priority to have “think time” each day. Judgement calls are difficult, but that doesn’t mean you should be unprepared. Find time each day to review and reflect on your decision-making process.
Two Thoughts
Progress and Purpose.
Happiness is not about reaching your goals. It's about aligning your goals with your values.
Progress without purpose is empty. Achievement without impact is fleeting.
Success is most rewarding when it serves the people and principles that matter to you.
