Light on Leadership 2+2+2
Why do others not like my ideas?
Our goal for the Light on Leadership newsletter is to provide you with two questions and two thoughts in less than two minutes. We know you are busy leaders, so we hope this content is something you can use and share with others! Enjoy.
Two Questions
Why are some people afraid of change?
Many studies have examined the process of change and why, within every organization, there is a small group of people eager to embrace new ideas (early adopters), and another small group resistant to change (late adopters or laggards).
As leaders, it's easy to become frustrated with those who seem strongly opposed to trying anything new. Instead of giving in to this frustration, leaders should focus on investing more time in understanding the reasons behind this resistance. Often, what appears as an unwillingness to change is actually a fear of the unknown. Change is not only challenging; it's also frightening for many people.
How do informal leaders influence change?
By nature, humans are social and crave interaction and approval from others. Whether it's political parties, sports teams, or social groups, we identify ourselves by our "membership" in these groups. The same is true within our organizations and companies. Small, informal groups are created, impacted by the thoughts and actions of a few key informal leaders.
But what does this have to do with change?
Understanding the social influence and power of these individuals and working with them prior to initiating change can save a great deal of time and energy. When others are engaged and help create a new idea, they will support it. When they are told "just trust me," it is likely to fail.
Two Thoughts
Trust and Leadership.
Gregg Popovich said, "Good teams become great ones when the members trust each other enough to surrender the me for the we."
Transparency builds trust.
Communication builds trust.Trust is earned, not given.
