Two Questions

Is an apple a fruit or vegetable?

How does confirmation bias affect you as a leader? According to dictionary.com, confirmation bias is the tendency to interpret and analyze information in a way that reinforces one’s preexisting beliefs and convictions. Consider two questions: Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Is an apple a fruit or a vegetable? You likely have an immediate answer to both, and you could even find research online to support your answers. While these examples are simple and light-hearted, leaders often exhibit the same tendencies when making far more impactful decisions.

So, the next time you are 99% sure about a decision for your organization, take a moment to reconsider the remaining 1%.

What do you model?

What's your passion and what's your goal? As a leader, it's crucial to contemplate these two questions regularly. If you lack passion for your daily tasks, it may be challenging or even impossible to be fully engaged and satisfied in your work.

One of the things we can control in life is where and how we choose to invest our time and energy. There are plenty of stories and research that illustrate the importance of investing our time in our family and friends versus chasing material objects. The leadership challenge becomes how we model this behavior for those we are around each day. As leaders, we get to set the tone of what is important and valued within our organization. Team members who feel valued are much more likely to be passionate, fulfilled, and motivated.
