Light on Leadership 2+2+2

The power of an eraser!

Our goal for the Light on Leadership newsletter is to provide you with two questions and two thoughts in less than two minutes. We know you are busy leaders, so we hope this content is something you can use and share with others! Enjoy.

Two Questions

Do you embrace “failure”?

Don't just fail - fail magnificently! Much can be learned about leadership from observing a classroom full of young children. Their interactions are genuine, their energy is high, and their learning is continuous. Moreover, their learning pivots around the concept of failing multiple times before mastering a new idea or concept. Have you ever wondered why an eraser is the most common school supply in an elementary classroom? Because mistakes aren't permanent. We can erase the first attempt and try again - we learn by doing!

Acknowledging that failure is part of the learning process can be difficult for leaders. To remind yourself of this, keep an eraser on your desk. The next time you make a mistake, remember that it's all part of the improvement process.

Why don’t you listen to me?

"Two monologues do not make a dialogue." This insightful quote comes from author Brian Smith. Whenever communication involves more than one person, some degree of miscommunication is bound to happen. Another common saying we often hear is, "If you want something done right, do it yourself." Have you ever considered how this advice relates to effective communication? Is poor communication the real reason we feel the need to do everything ourselves?

As leaders, we can get caught in the whirlwind of being busy. We rush from one meeting to another, send and receive hundreds of emails each day, and then become frustrated when a task isn't completed exactly as we pictured. Before expressing this frustration, take a moment to reflect on the instructions you gave and how they might have been understood.

Two Thoughts
